imageWe've been reticent to comment on the current election campaign because political punditry is not our core skill. After all, we want to focus on the issues that directly affect Toronto's design and cultural communities. So, when the Liberal government recently promised new deals to Toronto - deals that would allow us to better compete with other great international cities - we were enthusiastic.

But the Conservative's recent surge in Canadian opinion polls has us wondering what will happen to those city-building deals if the Liberals lose power. Will Toronto have to start over again under a different political regime? As carefully as we follow the current campaign we don't know where Conservatives stand on this issue. What about the NDP? Their decision to bring down the government brought on this election. What is their position? Will they maintain the balance of power in a new government and, if so, will they risk yet another election if the Conservatives decide Toronto is too powerful as is and reduce the promised funding? Do any of our readers know? Comments anyone?

  1. I’m afraid that we’ll end up back 10 years but as long as the conservatives focus only on corruption issues who can tell what their platform on TOronto is.

  2. The Liberals seem to be asleep… They’ve managed the economy well, balanced the budget, made strides to improve health care and they’re going to be brought down because they helped keep Quebec from separating?!? Geez.

Better we get a right wing, faith driven band of Canadian extremists in power instead of the Liberals. That makes sense.

  3. I laugh every time someone suggests that the Conservatives can better manage the country’s finances, check your history folks. There hasn’t been a conservative government in the history of the free world that didn’t bankrupt the treasury. Remember the GST, we had to impose that because Mulrony was spending money like a drunken sailor.

What really bothers me is that Harper was so determined to become Prime Minister that he denied the people the opportunity to hear the results of the Gomery report. Sorry, if you’re going to make statements that the current government is corrupt, at least allow me the opportunity to review the facts when they are available. What is he afraid of, that his accusations are not true?

And why can’t we debate real issues, who cares where where Paul Martin registers his ships! Disney Cruise Lines registers their ships in Panama, it was in their commercials. If you didn’t know that registering ships in Panama, Liberia, or the Barbados wasn’t a common occurrence in the shipping industry, than I don’t think you should even be allowed to vote. Its basic business practices, if I had my choice, my car would still be registered in the State of Florida where the yearly registration fee is $35 and there is no Drive Clean program, does that make me less of a Canadian?

  4. Nothing in the debates last night that answered these questions for me. Anyone see something I missed?

  5. The CBC news is reporting this afternoon that Mayor Miller is concerned some 60 day care sites will not be funded if the conservatives take power. He speculated that other funding promised to cities would evaporate.

  6. The Liberals have done absolutely nothing for this city. If you want to see the Liberal legacy just take a look at our waterfront. That more or less sums up their 12-year rule. Enough is enough.
