Not your average building…

As a one who is not a fan of the current trend of "Blockbuster" public buildings where designs are chosen on the basis of the ability of the design to solicit funding from the private sector, I present these photos from a recent tour of the ROM "Crystal". The tour was generously provided by Stephan and Patrick of Studio Daniel Libeskind.

There is a time in the life of every building where the transitory, imperfect and happenstance conditions of the construction site lend themselves to the most provocative and engaging moments in that life. I believe that these photos capture a few of those moments.

Although still not a fan of blockbuster buildings, I recognize that the ROM Crystal, in its current state, provides a few glimpses of the heroic complexity which the designers must have intended.

  1. How on earth did you get access to the site to take photos? I’m jealous.

  2. Hi Raj.

I’m fortunate to have two friends who also happen to be great baseball players on the same team as me!

Stephan and Patrick are the site architects for Studio Daniel Libeskind and they took some of us on the team on a tour.

If I go again, I’ll try to take more photos and send you same.

  4. Well if you go again; i have my own steeltoes and hardhat and promise to not get in anybodys way ;)

As an architecture student, I agree with the opinion on blockbuster buildings for the most part, but seeing this stuff go up, provides some interesting insights. Also photographs from cosntruction sites such as this are a rare and unique thing usualy; never to be reproduced. These views will never again be possible, which is what makes the photos so interesting, People don’t photograph work in progress enough in my opinion.
