Seven Minutes of the TTC Strike by Bicycle on Gerrard
Just in case you wondered what Toronto would be like without its transit system, the TTC union gave us a reminder yesterday. Take seven minutes to get a cell phone cam view of stalled traffic on Gerrard Street between River and Yonge, at 10 Monday morning.
Powerful and revealing video. Far beyond commenting on how the TTC strike affected commuters, it illustrates vividly how badly cyclists are squeezed between the sidewalk and car lanes and pointedly underscrores the need for bicycle lanes on all major streets.
Two things struck me watching this: the lack of other cyclists and the number of times the videographer takes to the curb to continue riding.
As for the first one - at 30 degrees + Smog I know I would be unable to ride on such a day. I put the gauntlet down to my fellow asthmatic, Stephen Harper to spend a week in Toronto without his inhaler. Maybe then we could get him to cry 'Kyoto'.
On the curb riding thing; you gotta do it. Bicycles are not cars and should have the freedom, within reason, to depart from the regular rules of the road. Though I wouldn't recommend riding like these couriers in NYC.
