ERA Architects gave a tour of the old Don Jail yesterday. They are renovating the building as part of the new Bridgepoint Medical Facility. Built in 1862, the jail operated until the late 1970's.

  1. That picture of the gallows is the creepiest thing I’ve seen in quite a while. Shudder. Fascinating shots; thanks for posting them.

  2. Editor, can I order prints from this series of photos? How much would they be?

  4. Hi Candy, thanks for the post. This tour was not open to the general public – ERA is renovating the Don Jail as part of the Bridgepoint Medical Centre development. You might try them directly though.

  5. I toured the Don Jail a few years ago on Doors Open. It was an informative tour given by conservators from, oh darn I’m not sure, some arm of the Provincial government who still owned the jail at that point. The graffiti in the cells is not contemporary, it’s a recent addition courtesy of movie set dressers. The room with the cells on one side and the door to the gallows on the other is, interestingly enough not death row, it was a regular rank of cells and that was the day room where the prisoners pass their day, at night they were locked into the cells. Hangings took place at night, usually at midnight when the regular prisoners were locked in their cells. I have some pictures I took on my tour.

  6. I love prisoners, they’re so sexy and seeing the photos of the Don Jail gets me all hot & steamy.

  8. I took a tour with a fellow officer back in 1995. I thought he was whispering to me, when I told him i couldn’t hear what he was saying he ran up to me and asked if I could people talking..I told him I did. never went back in there again!! he said he had heard from others that they heard the same thing. it was as if there were 3 or 4 people all whispering to on enaother. I also found the fact that the entire jail was so hot insidebut the gallows was very cold.
