University Of Waterloo Urban Design Studio’s West Donland Video
Major urban design schemes like the West Donlands take years to complete. While we wait for it to take shape, have a look at the way students at the University of Waterloo Urban Design Studio envisioned the project.

  1. Videos like these frustrate me, in their inability to communcate their message. It is difficult to decipher what goes where, and what the vision is exactly. I’m not going to complain too loudly however, because I think it’s great that students at Waterloo get to practice with this medium.

It seems like video is playing a bigger role in urban design these days. A personal favorite of mine is this one by Will Alsop for the city of Bradford. I can only imagine how much it cost.

  2. Well, everything looks so fun however while these fancy videos are produced our urban areas get worst and dangerous.
Urbanism can not be done only inside the studios or computer softwares and attelite images.
Urbanism must be done by professionals who get down on the streets by foot knowing corners, and neibourhoods as a real experience.
While hours are spend to fancy some specific downtown areas, Jane and Finch as example get zero attention.
These areas need more attention, these areas need more community centres, better parks, better schools, better urban lighting, better green areas so they would look a bit more like the good downtown and front lake areas.
Urban Plan students and professionals need to get off their cars and computers more often and walk on real streets so they can get the real Urban feeling.
Probably most of them would get scared walking in dark and unfriendly areas but they at least would get in contact with areas that really need to be “fancy”.
